ROOM SET PHOTOGRAPHY

Background

In the 1980s I served my apprenticeship with top advertising photographers in London and Brighton where I learnt the skills of room set photography. Some aspects of room set photography have inevitably changed quite substantially over the years since, but many of the underlying techniques that I learnt are still very much in use for today’s room set photography.

Using today’s modern digital technology, stunning results can be now be achieved far more economically. Re-touching helps considerably and is often used post-shoot to achieve highly creative effects, to correct imperfections, to change background colours & patterns, as well as altering “out of window” views etc. Sets do now not need to be so perfect in construction as retouching is often a more cost-effective way of achieving the same results.

Studio & facilities

I work from sizeable high ceiling studio which enables me to provide flexibility to build a variety of room sets to meet each photography challenge. My studio is located within a large industrial/business estate, which means that there are usually other industrial or storage units available on a short-term rental basis for storing client’s products, or for constructing room sets for larger photography projects when required.

Over the years I have developed and invested in a significant range and variety of special wall-panels, windows, and props etc to meet the needs of my clients. In addition, I have established excellent long-term working relationships with local carpenters should any custom panels be required. This enables me to produce flexible, high quality room set photography which meets the individual needs of my client on a highly cost effective basis.

Post shoot workflow

Following a shoot I work quickly and efficiently to output images and immediately make available an online image gallery to display the results. This is emailed to the client before requirements for retouching are discussed. All outputting work is carried out on a top spec Mac Studio via a colour calibrated large gamut Eizo screen to speed things along with the massive files generated from my Hasselblad 50MP camera.
Over the years I have invested in the most advanced software to aid in retouching. I always use the latest version of adobe photoshop along with a collection of specialist plugins. This enables me to undertake complex retouching room set photography projects speedily but with highly visual results.
